4 ArtistWorks Instructors Nominated for 2023 Grammy Awards

On Tuesday, November 15, 2022, the 65th annual Grammy nominations recognizing the best recordings, albums, and musical artists of the last year were announced to the public. We are beyond excited to report that four current ArtistWorks instructors (as well as a few soon-to-be-announced educators!) have been nominated for Grammy Awards this year—Peter Erskine, Noam Pikelny, Chris Eldridge, and Andy Hall.

Peter Erskine:

World-renowned drummer and ArtistWorks instructor of jazz drums, Peter Erskine, has been nominated in the category of “Best Jazz Instrumental Album” for the prolific work on his recent live trio record entitled Live in Italy

Released on May 20, 2022, Live in Italy features jazz giants Alan Pasqua on piano and Darek Oles on bass alongside Erskine and was recorded live in concert on November 19, 2021, at the Teatro Sociale in Camogli, Italy. The ten track album features eight original compositions written by Pasqua, Oles, and Erskine, as well as two classic jazz standards—”Nuages” by Django Reinhardt and “Con Alma” by Dizzy Gillespie.

Noam Pikelny & Chris Eldridge:

Banjoist Noam Pikelny and guitarist Chris Eldridge are not only virtuosic musicians and bluegrass instructors here at ArtistWorks but are also co-founding members of the iconic acoustic quintet, Punch Brothers. Alongside mandolinist Chris Thile, fiddler Gabe Witcher, and bassist Paul Kowert, Pikelny and Eldridge are nominated in the category of “Best Folk Album” for their work on Punch Brothers’ most recent record, Hell on Church Street, which was released in January 2022.

Notes about Hell on Church Street from Punch Brothers’ website:

“In November of 2020, when the world felt so full of uncertainty, the Grammy-winning folk band Punch Brothers did the one thing that they could rely on: they stood in a circle, facing one another, and made music together. A weeklong recording session, after quarantining and little rehearsal outside of a few Zoom calls, had culminated in their new record, Hell on Church Street—a reimagining of bluegrass great Tony Rice’s landmark solo album, Church Street Blues.”

Andy Hall

Resophonic guitar master and ArtistWorks dobro and lap steel guitar instructor, Andy Hall, is also nominated for a Grammy Award this year alongside fellow members of his critically acclaimed bluegrass outfit, The Infamous Stringdusters. The group is up for an award in the category of “Best Bluegrass Album” for their recent record release, Toward the Fray, which debuted this past February.

Powerful notes about Toward the Fray from the Infamous Stringdusters’ website:

Music brought us all together some 16 years ago, but life and our evolution as people, not just musicians, is what keeps us together and keeps things interesting. Now we have something to say, and the experience to seize that moment in a meaningful way. Maybe this is just a first step in this new direction, and we are certainly not claiming to have all the answers--after all, the irony of growth is that there is a humility in it. But as we gain a sense of awareness and responsibility, we want to do everything we can to honor that and do some good in the world. That's what this album is all about.”
