A paraphrased conversation, December 27th, 2017:
Thanks for taking the time to talk with me today, Guthrie. We're very excited for your new album!
So am I. It's been a long time coming, but it was all worth the wait. Taking the time on it allowed me to really make it what I wanted. I had some amazing contributors, long time friends and musical influences, work on this album with me.
Thinking about the album broadly, how would you describe it?
It pays homage to the musical influences I've had throughout my life and career. All the way back to when I was a kid! About half the songs are originals and half are obscure covers. I covered the songs that I listened to all the time growing up, because they helped me develop my sound. I hate to use this phrasing, but it's really a roadmap of Americana music.
Can you give us a sneak peak of some of the music on the album?
There are 13 tracks on the album, and I'm excited about all of them. I play everything on it, from acoustic, to mandolin, jazz, funk, blues, and even gospel. Some great songs are on there, like "Nobodies Fault but Mine" and "I've Got my Mojo Working".
What makes this album so meaningful to you?
It's the soundtrack of my life story. The last track on it, "So Lonesome I Could Cry" is dedicated to my mom. I put so much of my heart and soul into this record, and I can't wait for everyone to hear it.
You talked about some exciting collaborations on "Life After Dark", can you share some of the people who worked on this?
There were so many people who made this album what it is! I worked with amazing artists, like Jeff Coffin, Sam Bush, and so many more. Everyone who influenced and helped me craft this album is important to me.
You have an exciting Spring with this album coming out, where can fans hear you perform?
I'll be touring with John Oates from January to March, so catch me on the road! Of course, students can always connect with me through my school on ArtistWorks.
That's what we love to hear! Where can students and fans get your album?
Preorder it online! It drops internationally on March 9th.
