ArtistWorks Jazz Teachers Discuss Jazz Improvisation
Jazz Improvisation was the topic of this rather "improvised" discussion panel of ArtistWorks Jazz Faculty: Eric Marienthal (jazz saxophone), Peter Erskine (jazz drums), Nathan East (jazz bass) and George Whitty (jazz piano). These all-stars were getting ready for a gig at the BlueNote and shared their perspectives on how important listening and responding are in a jazz performance. Peter talks about the role of responding to listening and George observes that in many musical performances, the players feel compelled to be "banging out jazz chords" the entire time they are on stage. There is a prudent role for silence and these master musicians relate their experience as well as the lessons they've learned.
