Nathan Cole, Classical Violin:
In a fun video from ArtistWorks violin teacher Nathan Cole, he dives deep into the wonderful world of violin subharmonics. As you’ll see, there’s more notes to play besides the ones you can play by normal means… sometimes you need to get low. Click here for more.
Jason Vieaux, Classical Guitar:
Upon hearing the death of music legend David Bowie, Jason recorded a solo guitar rendition of "Space Oddiity" late night in his hotel room while in Colombia for the Cartagena Music Festival. You can check out his heartfelt tribute here. Last month Jason performed "Symphony in C" which featured works by Shchedrin, Rodrigo and Ravel. We also recently interviewed one of Jason's students for the blog which you can read here, he's now had 7 Video Exchanges with Jason and is making great progress!
Eric Marienthal, Jazz Saxophone:
Eric Marienthal has been busy! He recently recorded with folk legend Bob Dylan last week for his new CD, which should be out soon he says. He also just finished a series of tours in both Europe and Japan. And if you’re into movies, check out "The Big Short", a film which was nominated for 5 Oscars this year! Eric plays sax on the soundtrack and is featured on a few solos, it was a real "thrilling experience" as he put it. Stay tuned this summer, he’ll be playing with the Chick Corea Electric Band who will reunite for a series of tours around the country. Click here for his lesson on making high notes sound good on saxophone.
Darol Anger, Fiddle:
In Fiddle news, Darol Anger is involved with a lot of different things as usual. He’s coming off a week in Spain for the Barcelona Fiddle Congress and as he says, "I feel like I'm at a career peak with my playing & teaching ability." If you haven’t heard it yet be sure to check out his ensemble album Mr. Sun, which features Darol on fiddle along with Joe Wash, Grant Gordy, and Ethan Jodziewicz. It’s gotten great reviews and they’ve played a bunch of fun shows together as a group. Darol has played a lot of shows recently with some other great musicians as well including his old mentor David Grisman and bluegrass legend Del McCoury, which as he says was "a great moment".
