ArtistWorks at SFMusicTech and the Rise of Online Music Education

The online music education panel at SFMusicTech will ask if online music lessons could be a major new revenue source for successful and aspiring artists.  With 35 million ‘Living Room’ players in the US alone and an estimated $4.5bn spent on music learning worldwide last year, the online music education market is experiencing substantial growth.

Speaking in advance of the event ArtistWorks CEO David Butler said:

"With support for the arts shrinking, it is important that technologists and music educators collaborate to find efficient ways to connect virtuoso teachers with motivated students. I look forward to a discussion on how technology can be used to rescue and reinvigorate the struggling field of music education."

The ArtistWorks Video Exchange™ platform allows absolute beginners to advanced players to upload videos of themselves playing directly to the site for their teachers review.  The teacher then replies to the student in a personalized video reply with advice on how to improve.  Both student and teachers’ video are shown together and seen by the entire student community and act as a giant online masterclass.  Subscribers have access to over 35,000 video lessons which include multi-angle camera view selection, slow-motion and video looping.  Artists already signed up range from Madonna percussionist Luis Conte and Eric Clapton bassist Nathan East to jazz drumming legend Billy Cobham and Mr. Big guitarist Paul Gilbert.

ABOUT DAVID BUTLER

Prior to co-founding ArtistWorks, David was a pioneering technologist at Quantum Computer Services, which became AOL. Leading a small group of programmers, David and his team wrote the original AOL1.0 software for the subscription-based online business. In 2001 AOL, which had become the first blue chip company of the Internet, was acquired by Time Warner for $164 billion.  After leaving AOL as VP of Technology and Strategy, David developed the technology platform for what would become Video Exchange™, initially so that he himself could learn jazz guitar online. He later generalized the platform to create solutions for a wide range of distance learning problems.
