Earl was fascinated by banjo from an early age. He played his father's banjo and one his brother owned until he was around 11 or 12 years old. The first banjo he owned was purchased from a Montgomery-Ward catologue and cost $10.95.

Earl Scruggs helped change bluegrass music along with Bill Monroe and later guitarist Lester Flatt. Earl Scruggs' use of 3 fingers rather than the classic clawhammer style changed the banjo from being part of the rhythm section to being a lead voice. He will be sadly missed.
