Developing Your Musical Style: George Whitty
Welcome to the latest episode of the ArtistWorks Music Series podcast! This week, ArtistWorks CEO Patricia Butler speaks with GRAMMY® and Emmy Award-winning jazz piano icon George Whitty to discuss the development of musical style and his advice on how musicians of any instrument or genre can create their own unique sound! The show is available wherever you listen to podcasts, or you can listen here at ArtistWorks.
For George the key to developing your own style comes from rhythmic nuances. “The more I teach, the more I come to the conclusion that it’s not so much about the notes that you play, it’s about making it feel like jazz,” George explains. “When you're swinging the beat and it feels good, you can play very little, and it will still feel uniquely your own.”
George Whitty has performed with the likes of the Brecker Brothers, Herbie Hancock, David Sanborn, Richard Bona, Chaka Khan, Sadao Watanabe, and a dozen others. His resume as a session musician and producer includes some of the best-selling records of all time: Santana’s Supernatural (with Dave Matthews), Celine Dion’s Falling Into You and These are Special Times, and more than 300 other CDs.
