Essential Bluegrass Guitar Picking Exercises
When it comes to bluegrass guitar, you’re only as strong as your picking. Developing a strong picking hand is integral to capturing the dynamic and rhythmic qualities that define Bluegrass music. Thankfully, Grammy®-winner and ArtistWorks Bluegrass Guitar Master Bryan Sutton is here with a new video, sharing his favorite exercises for honing his celebrated picking technique.
Sutton’s video lessons are built around a concept he calls “Flatpicking Flow”, which focuses the player’s attention to the dynamics and movement of their picking hand. “The dynamics give the guitar line more dimension, it essentially makes it mean more,” he explains. “What defines success is the quality of each note, how they connect, and how your movement settles into that rhythm.”
