George Whitty - Tapping into Time & Feel

Watch GRAMMY® and Emmy® award winning ArtistWorks piano virtuosso George Whitty break down the two most important elements of jazz piano – time and feel.

Throughout his career Whitty has collaborated with artists ranging from jazz legend Herbie Handcock to pop icon Celine Dion, landing his name on over 300 commercial records along the way. Given his incredible range and experience, there are few people more knowledgeable when it comes to locking into the unique rhythmic feel of a song.

Throughout this video lesson George uses grooves from Miles Davis’ "Some Kind of Blue” to demonstrate how to tap into the swinging feel of jazz music. As he explains “The first step to getting yourself to swing is to count jazz as a triplet-based groove, and play on the first and third of the triplet notes.”

“When you ‘lay back,’ you give your playing a real weight, and that's the key to making even really simple music sound like really cool music. It’s the art of Miles Davis”.
