Guitar Lesson from Paul Gilbert: Chromatic Riffs
One, two, three, four...it's time to rock n' roll! Paul Gilbert is very excited to have discovered a new guitar lick and he's going to show it to you in this special bonus guitar lesson about Chromatic Riffs! It sounds great and Paul takes you through how to play the lick with style and ease. This easy to follow guitar lesson is sure to get your foot stomping and will have you playing guitar like a rockstar in no time.
Don't forget about that foot stomping. It's a very rhythm important technique that Paul stresses throughout all his guitar lessons and it really helps to keep you playing guitar in time and on beat. It also forces you to really feel the music you're playing, so keep on stomping!
You'll be playing sixteenth notes here, which is hardly as crazy as it sounds. Just slow it down to a comfortable tempo before trying to speed it up. This guitar lick is basically an E that is "kinda fussiony" but is made to work with Chromaticism. Start with your B note at the 19th fret. Stretch out and pull off to the G note. That will be the main pull off of the lick. After this you'll pick it, but be sure to pull off the second note! In this guitar lesson you'll be able to hear how these notes will sound sliding off the strings of your guitar.

Now, the normal thing to do would be to play the same shape on the B string but Paul is going to throw in an "unguitar" thing here by reversing the order of the notes on the B string. This you'll have to hear. So instead of going down he'll be going up then pulling off and picking to end it with three chromatic notes. The three chromatic notes will start with the C sharp, C natural, and the B. That makes seven notes. Once you get comfortable and familiar with the pattern, everything else will become easy.
Next you'll add on E minor note, D and B with a pull off, up with G and A, and the chromatic notes E, E flat, and D. Put it all together slowly and end the lick with four more notes. On the D string these notes are on 7th and 9th frets. Hit the A and B notes in an upstroke and hammer-on and pick the last two notes G and E with a down and a up. And that's it, now go practice until you get it!
