Have you ever wondered how artists create such awesome clouds in their paintings?  After all, with no clouds you'd just have an empty sky...  So throwing in a few wispy clouds can really change the energy of your art.  Whether you’re painting a sunset sky or a bright blue afternoon, the element of clouds can add that missing touch in your painting so that your sky is not so barren.  BUA goes step by step here and teaches you how to bring your clouds to life using simple brush strokes and some water to rub out certain areas.  It's a good idea to get yourself a badger brush and some mist for this art lesson, they're also great tools for any painter to have in their studio.

When drawing clouds it's important to be gentle, delicate and subtle.  By doing this you’ll draw clouds that break forward into the atmosphere of your painting.  But don’t stop there.  Remember that the entire canvas is there for you to get creative and daring with your sky.  You can add a nice abstract touch by having clouds trail off the canvas - or use them in contrast of other objects like birds, buildings, or even the sun.  This contrast will give your clouds energy and depth to bring your sky to life. 

You can have your clouds be darker in the light, lighter in the dark or also add a bit of under plane for a cloud effect.  Be mindful that too many clouds can actually distract from the focus of your painting, so careful not to overdo it.  Be smart about your cloud energy and draw clouds where it will not affect the rest of your painting.  Smart and subtle is the way to go when drawing clouds.  Just don't forget use your own artistic license to what you think will look good.

Oh yes, there'll be happy accidents!  Don’t worry about the little mistakes that can be covered or washed away with water.  All artists make mistakes, and BUA demonstrates a perfect example of how to easily cover up a mistake.  Remember, the important part is to be subtle and wispy with your clouds to bring out the atmospheric energy in your painting.  With practice, these tips will help you become a better artist and will guide you on your way to mastering how to draw!
