John Patitucci Releases New Album, “John Patitucci Trio: Live in Italy”
This morning, world-renowned jazz pioneer, Grammy Award-winning bassist, and ArtistWorks upright and electric bass instructor, John Patitucci, released his latest album, entitled Live in Italy, alongside the members of his trio.
Joined by critically acclaimed, Grammy Award-winning saxophonist, Chris Potter, and one of the most sought-after, virtuosic drummers of his generation, Brian Blade, John spent all of July of 2021 touring throughout Italy with this powerfully iconic ensemble. Live in Italy captures a handful of performances from the tour, documenting the group’s amazing summer run and the enormously impactful sound of the trio.
“The chemistry between the three of us is born out of decades of playing together in different ensembles, and also as a trio at times,” John explains when asked about the group. “The freedom, connection, and our shared influences make this trio one of my favorite groups to play in, ever. The venues that we played in throughout Italy, many outdoors, were very inspiring throughout this tour.”
Despite recording a good portion of the tour, the majority of the performances that made it onto the album’s final track listing were captured from one specific show. While we can only imagine how fantastic the entire tour must have been, the particular show from which these recordings were captured could only be described as magical.
“The tour in 2021 in Italy was an incredible experience with my two dear friends, who happen to be some of the greatest musicians in the history of jazz music,” explains John. “The tour was organized by Alex Travi, who had the idea that we should bring someone to record live at some point during the tour. All the tracks, with the exception of ‘Without a Song,’ were recorded in Genova, Italy on July 22, 2021. ‘Without a Song’ was recorded on July 24, 2021 in Alba, Italy.”
