Peter Erskine's Tips for Hi-Hat Control
In this clip, ArtistWorks jazz drums teacher — the legendary Peter Erskine — offers up some helpful tips for hi-hat control.
From his work with Weather Report and heavyweights in the world of jazz fusion, to recordings with Michael Bublé, Diana Krall and fellow ArtistWorks instructor, bassist John Patitucci, Erskine's drum lessons give players the tools they need to play more tastefully, expressively and masterfully.
A main key to unlocking those skills, of course, is good hi-hat technique. In this series of exercises, Erskine explains how drummers can improve their hi-hat control to get more flexibility, voice and dexterity in their sound. "What's interesting with the hi-hat execution here," Erskine says, "Is that we will not just be playing it opened and closed. We will bring the cymbals together, and play them much like concert cymbals, or piatti." Watch the video below to get started.
