Play For The Vote!
ArtistWorks cello instructor Mike Block is calling on musicians across the US to #PlayForTheVote!
With a pandemic raging, voting in the United States has never felt more stressful. Yet, the importance of making our voices heard has never been greater! In the face of this disheartening paradox, Mike Block is calling on musicians everywhere to join his new innovative Play For The Vote. His idea is to organize musicians all across the country to set up performances at polling stations in an effort to make the voting experience fun, and hopefully drive more people to cast their ballot.
As Block explains, he got the idea while practicing the morning after the recent presidential debate: "I was thinking about all the stressful feelings around in-person voting versus mail-in voting, and as I played I thought, 'Music would make people feel better!' I contemplated how easy it would be for me to go to my polling station on election day and play music for voters, and then quickly realized how great it would be if everyone could do it, and that's how Play For the Vote was born!
“I'm inspired by artists both current and past, who understand that music is not just for self-diversion or public entertainment, but it is a tool we can use to make life more meaningful and bring people together.”
The idea of organizing such a large campaign may sound daunting, but the enthusiasm of the music community all throughout the US is already bringing Block's vision of Play For The Vote to life. According to the cellist, “We've been getting such a great response across the country. In less than a week of our existence, musicians from 32 states and D.C. have signed up to #PlayForTheVote!”
