The 60's were a uniquely transformative era artistically, politically, and spiritually. What makes the music of the era so enthralling, explains Marienthal, is the way in which the energy of the time was captured on the albums. “When you listen to the jazz music of the 60’s, you often feel the angst of the era,” he says. "John Coltrane's Ascension album recorded in 1965, for example, is one of the most turbulent and ‘out' albums ever.”
The award-winning saxophonist discusses his reverence for artists like Coltrane, Sun Ra, sharing a dressing room with the legendary Archie Shepp in Sweden, and much more!
