If you’ve been on the internet at all over the past few months, you already know that many musicians are satisfying their live performance itch by hosting virtual concerts and jam sessions for their socially distant fans. Legendary comic and banjoist Steve Martin is the latest to put on a show for the internet to see, and he’s included a few familiar faces in his ensemble.
Backed by the Philadelphia Orchestra, Steve delivers a new, lively twist on his 2017 tune “Office Supplies” in this unique musical experience. The song was a part of the Philadelphia Orchestra’s HearNOW: At-Home Gala, a remote event dedicated to promoting music education in the Philly area. ArtistWorks students will quickly recognize trumpet master David Bilger and clarinet master Ricardo Morales from the bunch, with David sharing prime real estate with Steve in the video’s thumbnail.
Prior to performing, Steve informs the audience that he will explain the meaning behind the title “Office Supplies” once the tune is completed. After a high-intensity performance (which includes a dance number between a trombonist and his daughter), Steve dives into the song title’s origin in true Steve Martin fashion. “If, at the end of the song, you’re not thinking of office supplies, then I haven’t done my job,” he jokes.
Check out the full performance below, and be sure to keep an eye out for David and Ricardo!
