This week, ArtistWorks CEO Patricia Butler sits down with GRAMMY award-winning jazz saxophone legend Eric Marienthal to discuss how to overcome roadblocks in your musical journey. This week's conversation is very relevant to any musician whose practice regime has been impacted by the quarantine. While a lot of musicians may feel they learn best from in-person lessons, Eric feels there is as much—if not more—to be gained from ArtistWorks’ video lessons. He particularly encourages students to take advantage of ArtistWorks’ exciting Video Exchange Learning platform, that allows participants to submit videos for review.

On this platform, Eric reviews each submission and records a video response, offering specific guidance. He compares it to being at a football game where, “I can slow down and rewind the problem areas and recognize things I wouldn’t be able to see in real time. The Video Exchange allows me to help students take their playing to the next level.”

Eric explains how it is often small inconsistencies in our playing that are often at the root of what's holding us back as musicians “Sometimes you're so used to playing the way you do, you're actually ingraining bad habits. Maybe it’s a breathing issue, or an intonation issue. But if that’s never brought to your attention, it’ll never start to sound better.”

The best part is, all students can access the Video Exchange library and watch and learn from each other’s interactions with Eric.
