5 Amazing Performances for World Bluegrass Day

World Bluegrass Day 2

Happy World Bluegrass Day from all of us at ArtistWorks! To celebrate the big day, here are five amazing performances from some of the true greats of the scene — most of them happen to be instructors right here at ArtistWorks, too. From bluegrass guitar and flatpicking to mind-blowing dobro playing, we hope you enjoy these elevated takes on classic bluegrass songs.

Bryan Sutton and Mike Marshall, "Cherokee Shuffle"

Mike Marshall and Bryan Sutton are musical savants in their own right, but put the two of them in a room together and you’ll witness real bluegrass magic. In this electric rendition of the classic “Cherokee Shuffle,” the duo effortlessly exchange licks at breakneck speeds, showing off their chops without even batting an eye. Bluegrass duets never looked so cool.

Missy Raines and Alison Brown, "Darlin' Pal(s) Of Mine"

What do you do when you have three upright bass players but only one bass? In this live clip, Missy Raines and Alison Brown perform a modern cover of the Flatt & Scruggs duet “Little Darlin', Pal Of Mine.” However, pandemonium breaks out when Mike Bub and Todd Phillips decide to join the party halfway in. This video may look like a 3 Stooges routine, but it sure sounds like bluegrass gold.

Andy Hall and Mike Marshall, "Salt Creek"

You can’t talk about bluegrass without bringing up the dobro, and nobody plays it quite like Andy Hall. Here, Andy and Mike Marshall put an improvisational twist on the iconic bluegrass tune “Salt Creek.” We consider it required viewing for all dobro players!

Chris Thile and Michael Daves, NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

NPR Music’s Tiny Desk Concert is the closest you can get to being in the same room as your favorite musicians. While it was hard to select just one bluegrass concert from this series, we feel Chris Thile and Michael Daves’ performance properly showcases the duo’s adeptness on the strings. It’s soulful, intense, and, most importantly, intimate.

Darol Anger, Michael Daves, Mike Marshall, Missy Raines, Bryan Sutton, and Tony Trischka at RockGrass 2018

Get ready for the jam session to end all jam sessions. This group is a real who’s who of bluegrass heavyweights, consisting of a majority of our bluegrass instructors. Between Tony Trischka’s effortless plucking, Missy Raines’ driving bass, and Darol Anger’s lightning fast bowing — not to mention the amazing playing from guitarists Michael Daves and Bryan Sutton as well as mandolin slinger Mike Marshall — you won’t know what hit you by the time this video ends. There’s some serious pickin’ in this version of "Ride the Wild Turkey"!

We’re honored you’ve chosen ArtistWorks to share the spirit of bluegrass music, and hope you’ll renew to keep the learning going.
