Blues Rock Guitar Lesson: An Introduction to Power Chords with Jared James Nichols

One of the most common types of guitar chords that can be heard across musical styles ranging from classic to modern rock, blues, metal, and everything in between is the Power Chord. So, it’s no surprise that the Power Chord is a critical element and a staple within the blues rock guitar style and the genre in general. Therefore, it’s essential to fully understand what defines a Power Chord and master the associated performance techniques when learning to play hard rock and blues guitar.

In this online guitar lesson, world-renowned guitarist, “Blues Power” titan, and ArtistWorks blues rock guitar instructor, Jared James Nichols, dives deep into the topic of Power Chords. He shows you how to construct them anywhere on the neck, and even outlines a few classic riffs that utilize these mighty two-note harmonies.

“A Power Chord is the staple of rock ‘n’ roll. It’s the staple of guitar riffs in modern rock and even blues music,” explains Jared. “So many of your favorite songs use Power Chords and you may not even realize it. They’re literally everywhere in rock ‘n’ roll.”

Power Chords have a very distinct tonality that makes them easily recognizable and for that reason, they’ve become such a foundational aesthetic of rock music and its sub-genres. And, as an added bonus, they’re relatively easy to grab and wail on anywhere on the guitar neck.

“Even though Power Chords are only two notes, they bring such a strong sound and thick tone to whatever you’re playing,” Jared explains. “They’re almost like single notes in disguise, but the two notes work together to sound super full and aggressive in a way that single notes just can’t.”

To learn more about Power Chords, how to build them, and a handful of classic riffs that employ them, dive into this online guitar lesson from Jared James Nichols:
