"Caterina Lichtenberg Solo" Nominated for Opus Klassik Award
On May 15, 2020, master classical mandolinist and ArtistWorks instructor, Caterina Lichtenberg, released her latest album, Caterina Lichtenberg Solo. Earlier this month, the Association for the Promotion of Classical Music announced that the nineteen-track album has been nominated for a 2021 Opus Klassik Award, one of the most prestigious German awards recognizing achievement in classical music performance.
Caterina Lichtenberg Solo, Caterina’s tenth album release as a leader, has been nominated for awards in two of the Opus Klassik’s twenty-five categories: “Classical Without Limits” and “Solo Instrument Performance.” Also nominated for an award in these categories are artists such as Yo-Yo Ma & Kathryn Stott for Songs of Comfort and Hope, Pat Metheny for Road to the Sun, Sergey Malov for Bach - 6 Suites for Cello Solo, and more. The caliber of musicianship among all the nominees in these two categories is a true testament to the award’s prestige, and to Caterina’s mastery of the classical mandolin.
In Caterina Lichtenberg Solo, Caterina performs solo works on three different types of mandolins: the Neapolitan mandolin, Baroque mandolin, and American mandola—each bringing a unique flavor to the album and emphasizing Caterina’s expansive musical palette.
As indicated by Caterina’s instrument selection, the album features a repertoire spanning from Baroque to Neapolitan and 20th Century, including works from notable composers like Bach, Calace, Telemann, Kuwahara, and Abel. The album is a true “tour de force” of virtuosity and emotional depth that is rarely heard on Caterina’s chosen instrument.
