Celebrating the Life and Legacy of Doc Watson

ArtistWorks’ bluegrass guitar master Bryan Sutton hosts a live streaming event with T. Michael Coleman, Jack Lawrence, Sam Bush and Jeff Hanna to "Celebrate the Life and Legacy of Doc Watson" on his birthday, March 3rd at 4:30pm Pacific time!

This iconic musical group will reminisce about their days playing with and learning from the legendary flat picker, who many think was the greatest of all time.

Doc Watson was an American guitarist, songwriter, and singer who came to prominence during the 1960s folk revival. Unlike most country and bluegrass musicians who used the guitar as a secondary instrument for providing rhythmic backup, Watson played the kind of flashy, rapid-fire melodies normally played by a fiddle or banjo.

His revolutionary use of cross-picking particularly dazzled and influenced generations of musicians, including bluegrass giants like Clarence White and Tony Rice. Doc also performed Whiskey Before Breakfast on Bryan Sutton’s Grammy® Award winning album “Not Too Far From the Tree” in 2007, a recording that solidly secured Bryan’s place alongside the legend.

Watson died in 2012 at the age of 89, but he stayed active even in his final years,  playing at various festivals and events. People would still flock to see the man that created “an entirely new style of playing" who continued to be a driving, creative force on the acoustic music scene until his last days. Musicians and fans alike are still inspired by this giant of American folk music.

Tune in to our Facebook page on Wednesday, March 3rd at 4:30pm Pacifc time to watch the show, and keep an eye out for more live broadcasts in the coming weeks!
