David Grisman Birthday Tribute from Mike Marshall and ArtistWorks
Today marks the 70th birthday of mandolin pioneer David Grisman, or "Dawg" as he is commonly called. His influence on ArtistWorks mandolin instructor Mike Marshall began with him studying Dawg's early recordings as a teenager, to joining the David Grisman Quintet himself in the late 70s, to later founding the Mandolin Symposium together. Throughout the years the two mandolin masters have managed to maintain their unqiue bond which is rare to find.
"I kinda don't know where to begin because of how important of a person he was in my life... He's a teacher, he's been a partner, he's been many things. His music, his mentorship, his guidance in so many ways, really pointed the way for me and my whole generation. I'm guessing a good portion of the students on this website feel the same way. He's just been out there, being creative, and also searching for the roots of this music and appreciating everything that's come before him, and studies it to this day… I had the unbelievable good fortune to go out there on a vacation hoping to meet those guys, and ended up in the studio recording with them and Stephane Grappelli and a 60 piece orchestra. My life changed forever after that and it lead me to everything I've done since. So saying thanks ain't enough." - Mike Marshall
