Dobro Lesson: Learn “Angeline the Baker” with Andy Hall

As we all eagerly await the return of live music and the joy of meeting up with friends and family to play some tunes, why not prepare for that first open jam session of 2021 by tackling a new dobro lesson from master musician Andy Hall?

In this lesson, Andy dives into the classic bluegrass fiddle tune, “Angeline the Baker,” and provides a step-by-step breakdown of each phrase within the song’s two parts.

“‘Angeline the Baker’ is a pretty well-known fiddle tune and stands alone as a really nice instrumental in D,” Andy explains, “If you go to any jam session, this is a tune that certainly might get called.”

Through the process of teaching the tune, Andy also highlights 3 critical concepts that will help improve your dobro playing: the forward roll, string jumping, and pull-offs. He also explains the importance of understanding a song’s form, and specifically highlights the common AABB bluegrass form structure used in “Angeline the Baker.”

“When I’m discussing these songs, a lot of times there will be an ‘A’ part and a ‘B’ part,” explains Andy. “So, the songs will often be divided into two sections. That’s the way this song is."

So, take a seat, grab your dobro, and check out Andy Hall’s lesson below:
