Eric Marienthal How to Play “Quiet Nights”
Learn how to play Antônio Carlos Jobim’s classic bossa nova tune “Quiet Nights,” taught by ArtistWorks jazz saxophone master Eric Marienthal
“Corcovado” — known in English as “Quiet Nights, Quiet Stars” — is a bossa nova classic that has been recorded by some of the most iconic figures in jazz, including João Gilberto, Cannonball Adderley, Frank Sinatra, Ella Fitzgerald and Diana Krall.
In this jazz saxophone lesson Eric analyzes and explains the sheet music for this bossa nova classic and demonstrates how to perform the sax lead. “This piece of music is a great example of a reading exercise that focuses you to subdivide every beat,” Eric explains. “The first note of the lead starts on the upbeat and goes on to utilize interesting combinations of eight notes and quarter notes.”
