Nathan East's Tips for Playing in the Pocket
If there’s one thing that is immediately clear when starting bass guitar lessons, it’s that a lot of technical skill goes into becoming a great bass player. However, as many musicians learn the hard way, all of that technical prowess means nothing if you can’t play in the pocket.
So, what exactly does it mean to play in the pocket? In the most basic terms, it means getting locked into the groove of the song you’re playing. Synchronicity between the drums and your bass guitar is key; once you both are in tune with each other, there can be room for experimentation.
As ArtistWorks electric bass master Nathan East explains in the video below, staying in the pocket is oftentimes harder than it seems. This becomes apparent in his first exercise, where he plays quarter notes along with a click track. “Sometimes there’s a tendency to drag behind [the click track], or rush in front of it,” he states.
