The freedom of the summer months often feels infinite—no limits, no boundaries, no restrictions. As children, we’re untethered from the confines of the classroom and, as adults, we feel an equal need to escape from the office, explore the outdoors, and enjoy a vacation away. Fortunately, like the summertime, music is also liberating, and one of the great beauties of playing an instrument is the ability to take it with you wherever you go.

“I learned a lot of guitar in the summertime as a kid. It was a great time to get together with my friends who also had guitars to share ideas and play together,” David explains. “We’d go camping, gather around the campfire, pass around different instruments, and just play. It was wonderful fun!”

David goes on to emphasize that, not only were these summer campfire jam sessions great fun, but they were also a perfect catalyst for collaboration, exchanging ideas (both musical and otherwise), and teaching.

“Whenever you get musicians together, whether they’re professionals or amateurs, there’s always this beginning point where you have to find musical common denominators,” David explains. “So, invariably, there’s some teaching that happens. If someone wants to play a Grateful Dead song, for example, and you don’t know it, you’ve got to learn it from your fellow players really fast. But, then you walk away from the jam session having learned something new.”
