Resophonic Guitar Lesson: Building a Solo

Dynamism in musical improvisation is crucial for keeping the audience engaged and creating a sense of excitement and spontaneity. It allows the musician to explore different textures, tempos, and intensities, adding depth and variety to the performance.

Moreover, telling a story through a solo adds emotional resonance and connects the listener on a deeper level. Just like a well-crafted narrative, a solo should have a clear beginning, middle, and end, with each phrase contributing to the overall arc. By weaving together melodic motifs and rhythmic patterns, musicians can convey emotions, build tension, and ultimately deliver a memorable and compelling musical journey.

In this online dobro lesson, resophonic guitar virtuoso, co-founding member of The Infamous Stringdusters, and ArtistWorks bluegrass instructor, Andy Hall, outlines his unique approaches to crafting a solo and the improvisational techniques that he employs to create engaging and exciting phrases.

“Throughout my career, I’ve focused heavily on refining my phrasing,” Andy explains. “What I mean by phrasing, is the ability to communicate ideas through music, almost like a conversation. You’ll want longer phrases, shorter phrases, and, as when speaking, you’ll want to include some breaths.”

What is musical phrasing?

Musical phrasing refers to the art of shaping and organizing musical passages into coherent and expressive units. Much like the punctuation and syntax in language, phrasing in music involves dividing a piece into phrases or musical sentences, each with its own musical idea or theme. These musical phrases typically consist of a beginning, a middle, and an end, with variations in dynamics, articulation, and rhythm to convey emotion and meaning.

Understanding and interpreting musical phrasing allows musicians to breathe life into their performances, creating nuance, drama, and storytelling within the music. It's not only about playing the right notes but also about how those notes are articulated, connected, and grouped to convey a sense of musical direction and expression.
