Review: Fingerstyle Guitar with Martin Taylor

In my younger days, I was a serious musician. Having played in many types of bands and eventually earning my Masters degree in music, I was seriously motivated to make music as my life career.

However, life brought many changes that took me in other directions, which brought me into a different career and a growing family, but that was a long time ago.

Years later, as my kids have grown up and since left the house, I tend to glance over at the dusty guitars and amplifiers sitting at the far end of my office. Yet, something was missing.

"That ship has sailed. It was a different time, and it is gone," I said. "It's too hard anymore and it was too long ago. Not happening," I would say as if to convince myself to not pick up that fading guitar once again.

But then, I did pick it up- and put it down, over and over again.

Eventually, I was asking around and posting messages to the jazz guitar forum about some direction I might take. Someone mentioned a few players that were teaching, one of which was Martin Taylor. I had never heard of Martin at that time, but thought I would check it out.

The first time I reviewed the "samples" and YouTube videos, I knew this what I wanted to pursue. Even though it is nearly 30 years later, I know that it was NOT too late. Martin's style is perfect for what I used to do with classical guitar and finger-style playing.

It has been over a year since I signed up with Martin's guitar school, and I must say that it has been the best thing that has happened to my playing.

I’m looking forward to getting back into gigging in the years ahead. But for now, it is time for serious woodshedding that I have been enjoying immensely.

Martin's lessons are very well explained and professionally done. The video exchanges are encouraging, enlightening, challenging, and informative all at the same time. I look forward to Martin's insights with each video exchange response.

Martin is a busy performer and travels internationally. However, he never delays in getting a response to students, even if he does it from his hotel room. And on a final note, Martin's responses are cordial and encouraging.

You can really tell that Martin is not just a great player and teacher, but a great person.

Since starting up with Martin, I now pick up my guitar and find it difficult to put it down. I'm now back to playing guitar again and not looking back. Thanks, Martin.
