Vocal Exercises for Singers: Pitch Control
Maintaining the proper pitch is perhaps one of the most challenging tasks for singers. In this singing lesson excerpt from the ArtistWorks Vocal School with Jeannie Deva, she shows you valuable vocal exercises for controlling pitch.
As she demonstrates in this video from her online voice lessons, toggling between two notes will help you identify and master the subtle differences between two pitches. Before you start on this voice lesson, be sure to expand the ribs. This will ensure there is plenty of air in the diphragm to support a full cycle of the exercise. Think of your voice as your instrument. Proper breath control is critical to mastering your voice. As you're going through this vocal exercise, remember to take a breath before the lip trill and again before the "eeee" exercise. The purpose of the lip trill exercise is to get rid of the tension around your vocal muscles. It's important to find the balance of just the right ammount of air without over doing it. Think of blowing into a bottle, if you blow too hard or too soft you won't hear any sound. So as you practice your lip trills, find the right balance of air so that it starts them flapping but not too much so that it blows them out.
Focus on making the two toggled notes a continuous spin of melody, and try not to sing too loud. The idea is to not overwork your voice here and become comfortable toggling between the two pitches.
