What Are You Searching For?
It happens to the best of us. Answering email turns into checking social media, and before you know it, you’re zoned out in an endless scroll.
In fact, we’re currently spending more time looking at our screens than ever before — around 23.6 hours a week, according to a recent USC Annenberg study. All of this begs the question, how do you want to spend your time? What are you searching for?
Let’s break that statistic down a bit further. 23.6 hours a week comes out to about three and a half hours per day. Think about that for a second. What if you spent half of that time learning an instrument? Imagine the progress you could make as a musician.
Spending quality time with an instrument is a great way to unplug from the online world, and it comes with its own share of health benefits. According to Livescience.com, "research shows that making music can lower blood pressure, decrease heart rate, reduce stress, and lessen anxiety and depression.” That’s in addition to the good old fashioned satisfaction you get from learning something new, and getting the opportunity to share it with family and friends.
Now, let’s compare that to the side effects of spending time on social media. A Forbes article states that “Facebook use [is] linked to both less moment-to-moment happiness and less life satisfaction — the more people used Facebook in a day, the more these two variables dropped off.”
With all of this in mind — next time you have an open spot in your schedule — consider ditching your phone and picking up your instrument of choice instead. It might even offer some comfort, relaxation and rejuvenation into your life.
