how to practice

"What we work on to practice is less important than how we work on them." - Eric Marienthal

They say practice makes perfect, but what often gets overlooked is how to practice effectively so you can see results. Not only is it important that you practice on a consistent basis, but you should make sure you know the best way to achieve your playing goals. Not only that, you need to know the difference between practicing and playing - this is vital for your progress.

ArtistWorks teacher Eric Marienthal has a 3-part lesson series going over how to put together a good practice routine for his jazz sax students. This not only works for playing saxophone however, there's some great ideas in here that can benefit any musician.

I

I had the opportunity to play a recital and teach a masterclass on June 1st in Tokyo. My hosts were the Japanese Trumpeter's Association and Yamaha. The concert was at the Music Salon at the huge Yamaha store in the Ginza in Tokyo. The crowd was standing room only, and of course many were trumpet players! My collaborative pianist was the extraordinary Midori Nagahara, and the program was the J. G. Penniquin "Morceau de Concert," Charles Reskin's "Sonata" and Joseph Turrin's "Caprice." Following the mini-concert was a masterclass which included 3 players from Tokyo -- an undergraduate student, a graduate student, and a free-lance performer, all being coached on standard orchestral excerpts.

learning an instrument makes you smarter

Did you know playing an instrument can make you smarter? If so then you are a wise one and maybe even a musician yourself. Keep playing music, it’s working.

In a recent article on CNN.com titled “Six tips that could make you smarter,” what do you think was top of the list? Indeed, studies have shown that learning a new instrument can improve your intellectual abilities. So if you’ve been playing the same one for a long time you might want to consider adding something new into the mix. Maybe it’s time to learn ukulele, we know a great couple of teachers.

national trumpet competition

"I feel lucky to get to work with these special people who live each day with dedication and purpose." - David Bilger

Congratulations to David Bilger and the Curtis Institute trumpet studio for winning first place in the Small Ensemble Division at the National Trumpet Competition! David helped coach the students on the original composition which they performed, and we reached out to him for his comments:

"The Curtis trumpet studio really showed them how it is done at the National Trumpet Competition! For the competition, there are taped preliminary auditions, and then the live Semifinals were on March 10, and the Finals were on March 12.

In this fantastic performance with the Venezuela Symphony Orchestra, Ricardo Morales plays a beautiful version of the 1st movement from Mozart's Clarinet Concerto. This is the final purely instrumental piece Mozart wrote shortly before his death in 1791.

Ricardo was recently featured on WOSU Public Media talking about playing clarinet with the Philadelphia Orchestra. They discused this piece as well as other topics including the different options for reeds, the evolution of the modern day clarinet, and more. Click here to check it out!

learning classical guitar at artistworks

In this student spotlight, we interview Paul Berge from New York who’s been learning classical guitar online with Jason Vieaux for a little over a year now. Not being able to find a local teacher in his area, Paul went searching for classical guitar lessons online, which is how he discovered ArtistWorks.

What made you want to learn classical guitar?

“Being an introvert with no singing ability, I was looking for more of a solo instrument. This naturally led me to the classical guitar. Another musician friend of mine happened to have a very cheap classical guitar laying around which he gave me. I immediately felt more at home with the nylon string guitar and began purchasing method books and seeking out instructional videos.”

Welcome to "Press Your Bow", the only game show devoted to violin subharmonics! So just what is a violin subharmonic? As your host Nathan Cole explains, violin subharmonics are notes that are lower than those you can play by normal means - notes that you can only play if you Press Your Bow! By pressing your bow, you can play notes that are lower in tone than the open G string, without having to tuning down the string.

So let’s get started. As Nathan demonstrates in the video, there are 3 steps to playing a subharmonic on violin:
