We are excited to announce the next addition to the ArtistWorks Online Music Faculty: Classical Mandolin with Caterina Lichtenberg.

This is a historic moment for the mandolin. We have effectively distilled some 300 years of mandolin history, pedagogy, and techniques into an easy to understand guide for any mandolinist at any skill level. Caterina has combined the ‘best of the best’ of their method books and repertoire into a step by step guide to classical mandolin playing. With hundreds of classical mandolin lessons, this is the most comprehensive classical mandolin curriculum ever created. And all the material is presented with Caterina’s engaging personality in such a way that it is never intimidating and always easy to grasp.

The Philadelphia Orchestra performs "La Marseillaise," which has been the French National Anthem since 1795. Originally titled "Chant de guerre pour l'Armée du Rhin," the song was written by Claude Joseph Rouget de Lisle in Strasbourg in 1792 as an anthem to freedom. learning piano online with christie peery

I started taking piano lessons from an in-person piano teacher when I was in late elementary with my younger sister. After about two years of in-person lessons, my parents seriously considered having us stop. We loved our teacher, but the expense of the lessons became a bit costly. Also, considering that someday my other younger siblings would want learn piano, my parents knew we couldn't possibly afford to continue in-person lessons for all of us children.

Around the time when my parents were deciding whether or not to pull us from our lessons, we heard from a friend about the Online Classical Piano School with Christie Peery. Their daughter was taking piano lessons online using the unique Video Exchange Learning® system and really enjoying them. My sister and I joined ArtistWorks six months later. My parents are very pleased with their decision, and it's been over four years now.

jason vieaux classical guitar

ArtistWorks instructor Jason Vieaux is one of only six people to ever win a Grammy Award for classical guitar.  Since winning for “best classical instrumental solo” for his album Play earlier this year, he joins an elite group of renowned guitarists who include Andrés Segovia, David Russell, Sharon Isbin, John Williams and Julian Bream.

As you can imagaine, it’s been pretty busy for Jason lately. Aside from keeping up with Video Exchanges from his online students at ArtistWorks, he’s been involved with a number of interesting things which are worth mentioning here.

getting to know Mike Block - Master of Cello

How long have you been playing the cello?

I started the cello when I was 9. I had played Suzuki Violin since I was 4 (along with my siblings), but when the string program started at 4th grade in my Elementary school, I decided I wanted to switch to the cello. One of my main motivations for switching to cello was so I could sit down when I practiced, which is a bit ironic in retrospect, since I always stand now.  My first teacher was Peter Sukonik, a Russian immigrant who was Associate Principal in the Kansas City Symphony.

famous cello pieces

Mike Block knows a lot about playing music, and we're so proud that he's now teaching people how to play cello online at ArtistWorks!

We recently asked him which famous cello pieces stand out as important ones to become familiar with as an aspiring cello player. Here's what he says:

Cello Suite No. 1, The Prelude - Bach

The cello is a beautiful instrument, so versatile and unique, and we are proud to have Mike Block join ArtistWorks as our new latest instructor. As someone with an extensive background in teaching people how to play cello, Mike often stresses the importance of fundamentals. Here we'll take you through a lesson on how to hold a cello bow, which is very important to do properly before learning more advanced techniques.
