Blues Rock Guitar Lesson: Playing with Attitude
One of the most powerful qualities that music posses is its almost universal ability to move us. Music can inspire feelings across the entire emotional spectrum and skilled musicians can tap into all of those ranging emotions based on the way they play. Based on their touch, feel, tone, and dynamics, for example, musicians of all genres can communicate the entire stretch of human emotions within any given performance.
In this online guitar lesson, world-renowned guitarist, “Blues Power” titan, and ArtistWorks blues rock guitar instructor, Jared James Nichols, provides his distinct insights on communicating emotion while playing, and the importance of “playing with attitude.” Jared outlines a few of his favorite techniques for expressing some common emotions on his guitar and shares a few tips on being present and mindful of your own emotions while playing.
“It’s one thing to know where the notes are, and one thing to learn how to play a scale shape or a chord,” Jared explains. “But, attitude and the way you play is like putting your own personal stamp on a musical phrase, riff, lick, or song. It’s so important! I think about this every time I pick up the guitar, and I think about it every time I listen to my favorite guitar players.”
“Playing with attitude” can seem like a very vague concept when you’re first picking up the guitar and learning to play. It can also feel difficult to focus on while you’re still learning basic techniques. However, it is an important element of performance to keep in mind as you are mastering your fundamentals, and will quickly come naturally as you progress. It’s one thing to play the correct notes, and another thing to play the correct notes with style.
“Your favorite players all have a certain attitude, whether it’s more of an energetic speed, or a mellow mood, or an angry style, or a laid back cool feel. They all convey these unique attitudes in their playing,” Jared explains. “This is something that I overlooked for years, but it’s something that should really be on your mind as you develop as a player. It’s something you should think about every time you pick up the guitar.”
