One of the interesting and unique qualities of stringed instruments is that their construction allows players to quickly access a wide range of harmonic tones with relative ease. The easy access to harmonics allows players of nearly all stringed instruments to implement these unique sonic textures into their playing in limitless creative and boundary-pushing ways. These harmonics are particularly beautiful and offer an ethereal sonic flavor when played on the acoustic guitar.

What makes music so wonderful is its innate ability to tell stories and elicit deep, complex emotional responses from its listeners. Like human emotions and the human experience, the most impactful musical performances are loud, soft, aggressive, tame, beautiful, sorrowful, happy, sad, and every combination and iteration thereof. In order to convey this vast array of emotions and feelings, musicians need to be acutely aware of the manner in which they use dynamics and color to tell their intended story within a performance.

One of the most powerful qualities that music posses is its almost universal ability to move us. Music can inspire feelings across the entire emotional spectrum and skilled musicians can tap into all of those ranging emotions based on the way they play. Based on their touch, feel, tone, and dynamics, for example, musicians of all genres can communicate the entire stretch of human emotions within any given performance.

Instruments are designed, for the most part, to emulate the sonic capabilities of the human voice. What’s beautiful about the human voice, particularly in the context of music, is its ability to convey a vast array of complex emotions by using subtle inflections and intricate nuances within a musical passage. These nuances can be as simple as slightly wavering the pitch of a single note up or down, a technique referred to as vibrato, which can completely alter the emotional character of a performance.

It goes without saying that dedicating focused time to practice is the best way to improve on your instrument. However, many of us don’t have the luxury of being able to commit 8 hours or even 1 hour a day to practice. Many of us are only able to allocate 30 or sometimes even just 10 to 15 minutes to our practice per day.
